Cllr Muzammil and McLean

Local councillors Shazna Muzammil and Keith McLean joined residents and community partners at an Army Engagement Day last week. The event provided the opportunity to meet serving personnel, learn about opportunities within the Army Reserve, and explore  how military skills such as leadership, teamwork and problem-solving benefit not only the Armed Forces but also local businesses and communities.

With reserve units based in Blakelands and Bletchley, the Councillors emphasise that the British Army is not a distant institution, it is made up of local people balancing service with family life, work, and community commitments here in Milton Keynes.

Speaking after the event, Councillor Shazna Muzammil said:

“It was a real privilege to spend time with serving personnel and hear directly about what they do. As the wife of a veteran, this visit was deeply personal for me, and it reinforced just how much we owe our Armed Forces for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

I was especially proud to hear about our young cadets, who represent the future of these values, as well as about our veteran community. The transition into civilian life can be challenging, and Milton Keynes is committed to ensuring veterans have access to meaningful support and real opportunities.

I was also surprised to learn that the Army offers over 30 different career pathways, skills that are highly valuable well beyond military service and encourage residents to reach out and find out more.”

Councillor Keith McLean added:

“Events like this help strengthen the connection between the Army and our local community. It’s important that residents understand both the opportunities available and the positive role our local reserve units play here in Milton Keynes.”

The Council is proud to hold Gold status under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, the highest level of recognition for organisations that actively support the Armed Forces Covenant.

The councillors are encouraging anyone interested in finding out more to attend future engagement events, support local cadet organisations, or explore opportunities to serve, whether part-time or full-time, as a soldier or an officer.
