Let’s Take Pride in Our City Again: Conservatives Lead the Call to Clean Up MK

Flytipping by MK Sign

Signs of neglect, such as litter, graffiti, overgrown vegetation on roundabouts, poorly maintained underpasses and dirty and broken street signage, are a growing concern amongst residents.  They are eroding the pride our residents feel in their local areas.

In response to this growing issue, Milton Keynes City Council Conservative Group have put forward a motion for this month’s Full Council, calling for a collaborative effort between Milton Keynes City Council, local businesses and community partners to restore,  clean up and show some care for our public spaces.

The motion gratefully acknowledges the vital work already carried out by Council teams, Parish and Town Councils, The Parks Trust and community groups. It seeks to build upon these efforts by empowering even more residents, schools, and businesses to take an active role in restoring pride in where we live.

Cllr Shazna Muzammil Leader of the Conservative Group, said:

“We’ve had many residents getting in touch about the way our city is looking — litter piling up, graffiti on bus stands, roundabouts and old road signs just forgotten.

Milton Keynes is our home and clean streets, tidy green spaces, and well-kept neighbourhoods matter — they shape how we feel about the place we live.

This motion is about coming together because we all need to play our part in making MK look and feel like the a city  we’re proud to call home.”

The motion asks for the creation of a Civic Pride Partnership Programme including a ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ scheme, inviting local businesses, community organisations and schools to take ownership of small public spaces. This could be an underpass or a bus stop or a small green space that an organisation commits to looking after, with support from the Council. This type of scheme is already in place in several other local authorities including ‘adopt a spot’ at London Borough of Havering and ‘adopt a place’ at Barnet Council.

Cllr Keith McLean, Olney Ward, said:

The ‘Adopt-a-Spot’ idea is simple but powerful. It’s about giving local people the opportunity to take real pride in the places they live and work — whether that’s a green space, a bus stop, or a local underpass.

We’ve seen this work in other councils, and there’s no reason it can’t work here in Milton Keynes.. It’s a great way for businesses, schools, and community groups to get involved, make a difference, and be recognised for it.

I hope councillors from all parties will support this motion and show that restoring pride in our city is something we can all get behind.”

The motion will be moved by Cllr Keith McLean and seconded by the Group Leader Cllr Shazna Muzammil and debated at Full Council on Wednesday 17 July.
